People: One Minute with singer/songwriter ESSE

Name: ESSE

Artistic Medium: Singer/Songwriter/Producer

Can you tell me a bit about yourself? I'm a curly long-haired singer/songwriter/producer, I've just started a new project under the name of ESSE.

What got you into writing music? I was having piano and guitar lessons from a very young age and constantly learning how to play other people's music… then through playing in bands since 14 I realised making my own music was a lot more self-fulfilling.

Who and what are your greatest influences? I'm often to-ing and fro-ing between a quiet sleepy town in the New Forest and London's hectic professional rush every week which I find influential somehow... but musically I find influences in Frank Sinatra's naturally relaxed way of performing to Bjork's freedom to create whatever she wants/feels.

What does your studio/work space look like? I've spent all my money trying to give the cold lifeless games room some warmth and comfort…it's getting there! But so far (amongst the collection of studio gear, keyboards, guitars and drums) I have a beautiful plant from B&Q that probably consumes more water than I do (I win on the coffee intake though), a large rug and most importantly for this time of year... a selection of electric heaters that usually do nothing to the frozen atmosphere which leaves me no choice but to wear my entire wardrobe.

Why do you write? I find writing (whether it be for a song or just some words/lyrics scribbled down) the easiest way of dusting off the cobwebs so to speak.

If you could collaborate with anyone dead or alive, who would it be and why? There's so many, but Thom Yorke springs to mind, just purely for his consistent ability to write music that is unexpected.

What are you working on at the moment? I have many tracks that I'm currently working on… 'Deep Heart' was just the first of many that I've finished.

What can we expect from you in the next couple of months? I'm just going to continue to hide away in the studio and write.
