'Venus' was instigated as a riff for a song that my band did once. I thought the idea was a strong one - a complex, busy and syncopated electric piano riff that also, due to its dual layers, has a sense of peace - kind of like a river looking calm but actually raging beneath the surface. I started off with the electric piano riff and gradually added layers - almost all synths until I realised it wasn't sufficient as an instrumental piece. So I wrote some lyrics centred around love as a character, shaping it to work for a short film I was working on at the time.
With the lyrics, I wanted to get a sense of love being like a natural drug. I used magical and mythical imagery and merged them with a sense of sci-fi, suiting the genre of the music.
It was new ground for me, but it opened up new territory as to what I could use Logic Pro for, and how is could use tools at my disposal to create the height, depth and breadth that an orchestra could, but with brand new sounds. I'll always remember this song that way.
