"The journey does not end here - death is just another path, one that we all must take. The gray rain-curtain of this world rolls back and all turns to silver glass. And then you see it... white shores and beyond a far green country under a swift sunrise." - 'The Return Of The King' (J.R.R. Tolkien, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens). Inspired by this quote and based on Neptune the Roman god of the sea. I also drew musical inspiration from Jon Hopkins' brilliant score to the 2010 film 'Monsters'. I wanted to do justice to the miraculously comforting words of the quote and Ian McKellen's performance.
The music had to stay fluid, hence the running bass and 5 beats to the bar (making the timing hard to keep in your hands, like water). Overall, the piece is a journey over the waters before Tolkien's 'white shores' at different speeds and temperaments. The quick, airy flight of the main theme, the floating B-section from 0:52, and the questioning mid-point from 2:30. Notice the use of the submarine radar, also heard in 'Venus (Poison Chalice) [VENUS]'.
